A Message from Your Associate Principals

Welcome to Rice Elementary School!

Our school is located in beautiful, sunny San Carlos, Arizona. Our prekindergarten through sixth grade school serves over 1,000 students. Our nearly 150 staff members strive for excellence as we work to support our students in their academic, cultural, emotional, and social growth. We are proud of our history in San Carlos, and we look forward to supporting its goals and aspirations while also celebrating the successes of each student we serve.

We are fortunate to have a dedicated staff that has the interest of every student in mind. In addition, we work to offer various academic programs, including core subjects such as reading, math, humanities, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). Beyond our core subjects, we also offer our students Apache language and physical education classes. Aside from the regular school day, we seek to enrich the lives of our students in any way we can; as such, we offer various extracurricular programs such as after school sports and student council.

At Rice Elementary, we are excited for the 2017-2018 school year. While we certainly face challenges, we are instituting supports to ensure all students have the opportunity to be successful. To that end, we have instituted a multiple-tiered or leveled system of support. For the first level of support, we teach all students what behaviors we expect at Rice Elementary and reinforce our students' positive behaviors. Although most students respond well to this, we understand that some students need extra support. In order to provide these supports, our second level of supports provides small group sessions with a counselor or social worker. During these group sessions, we offer students support, teach social skills, and discuss how to apply their new skills to their lives. Beyond this, our third level of support is very individualized and focuses on identifying ways for the student to be successful and partnering with parents to formulate and implement a plan.

Beyond these academic and behavior programs of support, we also highly encourage parents, guardians, and families to be active participants in their child’s education. We offer regular family learning nights, quarterly parent/teacher conferences, and fun social events such as the Christmas bazaar and Halloween carnival. At Rice Elementary, we always welcome parents, guardians, and families with open arms; we see all of you as partners in the educational process, and we welcome and need your support in ensuring that each student can succeed. We talk with all of our partners from our dedicated staff to our fearless leadership team to parents, guardians, and the community for their work in ensuring that all students have an opportunity to be successful here at Rice Elementary School.

Sincerely,

Valerie Cervantez and Ivan Tsosie
